This course gives the students a jump start into the world of IPv6. The class takes students who already knows IPv4, and methodically illustrates what is different in IPv6. Students are taken through all the major difference in IPv6, as well as how these differences allow for a more efficient Internet. All the while, the course highlighting the similarities between IPv6 and IPv4 to tie new concepts to old ones.
The class starts with an overview of the new IPv6 address architecture, which leads straight into Subneting in IPv6. Following that, some time is spent looking at each of the communication schemes: Unicast, Multicast, Anycast. Lastly, the class finishes by examining each tenant of the Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP).
By the end of this class, the student will be able to:
- Recognize and Describe the architecture of an IPv6 address
- Subnet larger IPv6 networks into smaller IPv6 networks
- Understand the different types of Unicast addresses (Link Local, Global Unicast, Unique-Local)
- Understand how Multicast is expanded and improved by IPv6
- Know the reserved Multicast addresses for All Nodes and All Routers on the local Subnet
- Understand the significance of the Solicited Node Multicast address
- Describe the tenants of Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP)
- Describe Stateless Auto Address Configuration (SLAAC)
- Describe Duplicate Address Detection (DAD)
- Describe Address Resolution in IPv6 and how it differs from ARP in IPv4
- Know the different message types that encompass NDP
